Onera Health, a Dutch medtech company based in Brabant, is advancing clinical sleep diagnostics with a wireless, at-home PSG system designed to meet medical standards.

Onera Health is addressing the global sleep disorder crisis, especially acute in Japan, by offering hospital-grade sleep testing at home. Headquartered in Brabant, Onera reflects the region’s medtech strength, combining high-tech innovation with international ambition.
Using a wireless, easy-to-use system, Onera enables accurate diagnosis without hospitalisation, easing pressure on healthcare systems and improving access to treatment. Its targeted expansion into Japan exemplifies Brabant’s mission to deliver impactful health innovations globally.

Onera’s growth mirrors Brabant’s broader medtech momentum, driven by collaboration across academia, industry, and clinical partners. Regional hubs like High Tech Campus Eindhoven and TU/e campus drives advances from surgical robotics to smart medication systems, supported by companies like MedEye, Microsure, and ReMediZ.

Initiatives such as Brabant Innovation Days highlight the region’s adaptive, collaborative culture and focus on deep tech, sustainable electronics, and photonics. Onera’s journey underscores how Brabant’s ecosystem empowers startups to scale and solve global health challenges.

Founder and CEO Ruben de Francisco shares his insights into the company’s mission and innovative solution.

What inspired you to start Onera Health?

In my previous engineering role, I worked closely with doctors who were frustrated by outdated sleep testing methods. I realised we could transform the process with modern technology.

Why is accessibility so important in sleep testing?

Untreated sleep disorders can lead to serious health complications and rising healthcare costs. By making PSG (polysomnography) tests more accessible, we help more people get the care they need while relieving some of the burden on medical systems.

How is Onera’s solution different from traditional sleep tests?

Instead of an overnight hospital stay with wires and monitors, patients use a simple, wireless kit at home. It’s more comfortable, eliminates waiting lists, and doesn’t require time off work.

What kind of data does your system collect?

Our biomedical lab-on-chip captures all key diagnostic signals – brainwaves, heart rate, oxygen levels, and more – and transmits them to our secure cloud platform for analysis.

How does Onera compare to consumer sleep trackers?

We’re not competing with smartwatches or sleep rings. Those are great for raising awareness but don’t offer medical-grade diagnostics. Our data meets clinical standards and supports real treatment decisions.

What treatments typically follow a PSG diagnosis?

It depends on the condition. Options include medication, CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) therapy, mandibular devices, or even nerve stimulation. But it all starts with an accurate diagnosis.

What’s next for Onera?

We’re expanding internationally, with a strong push into Japan, where sleep problems are widespread. We’re actively seeking partners, investors, and suppliers to help bring our solution to this critical market.
